The current issue of the ToTS journal presents research findings from various transportation sectors. One article focuses on safety measures in civilian aviation, while another investigates the psychological consequences of traffic accidents. Two articles analyze the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on transportation, specifically addressing the use of e-scooters in the first case and traffic accident rates in the second. Additional three articles explore pedestrian zones in cities and autonomous mobility. Let us delve into each article in more detail. The safety of general aviation is discussed based on the real situation in Indonesia, where it...
Exploring the Influencing Factors of Safety Recommendations' Effectiveness in Indonesian General Aviation
Fransisca Tiur Basaria
Transactions on Transport Sciences 2023, 14(3):4-15 | DOI: 10.5507/tots.2023.012
General aviation has been developed as one of the main methods of transportation in small rural aerodromes in Indonesia. Surrounded by mountainous terrain and limited equipment for flight operation, flying unpressurised aircraft with many restrictions is quite challenging and may have a high risk of accidents. The number of incidents involving general aviation has not decreased, despite the numerous safety recommendations that have been generated as a direct result of accident reports. This research aims to identify the factors affecting the effectiveness of safety recommendations related to accidents and serious incidents of general aviation in Indonesia....
Posttraumatic Stress Disorder After a Car Accident in the Czech Population: Prevalence and Risk Factors For Its Development

Transactions on Transport Sciences 2023, 14(3):16-24 | DOI: 10.5507/tots.2023.014
The aim of this study is to assess the prevalence of symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and to reveal risk factors for its development in a population of people affected by a traffic accident. This has not been the subject of any research study in the Czech Republic so far. Systematic investigation of the psychological impact of traffic accidents is a key condition in the system of their effective prevention and psychological care for road accident participants. The experience of a serious traffic accident can lead to a disturbance of psychological integrity in many people, and some of those involved in traffic accidents subsequently...
Examination of the Effects of the Pandemic Process on the E-scooter Usage Behaviours of Individuals with Machine Learning

Analysing user behaviour and thus travel mode choice is an important task in transport planning and policy-making in order to understand and predict travel demand. Recent pandemic events have challenged the modal choices of European users by reducing the use of public transport at various times and favouring walking and/or the use of electric bikes and scooters for last-mile travel. A number of studies have focused on analysing how the pandemic affected workers' choice of transport mode, with particular reference to local public transport, by developing multinomial logistic regression and artificial neural network models to analyse travellers' choice...
Impacts of COVID-19 on Motor Vehicle Crash Frequency and Severity by Functional Classification and Land Use Context
Nicholas N. Ferenchak
Transactions on Transport Sciences 2023, 14(3):32-42 | DOI: 10.5507/tots.2023.011
Reduced traffic exposure due to COVID-19 lockdowns may have resulted in changes to both the frequency and severity of motor vehicle crashes. In order to better understand the impact of COVID-19 lockdowns on traffic safety outcomes in US DOT Region 6, we explored the role of vehicle, user, and built environment factors on fatalities, injuries, and total crashes before and during COVID-19 lockdowns in Oklahoma and Texas. Findings suggest that while crash counts in Region 6 were 45%-50% lower during the COVID-19 lockdowns than the previous five-year averages, crashes were more severe. Fatal pedestrian crash counts decreased 3.9% during COVID-19 and fatal...
Pedestrianization in Historic Districts in terms of Traffic, Urban Development, and Economic Perspective of Sustainable City

Transactions on Transport Sciences 2023, 14(3):43-53 | DOI: 10.5507/tots.2023.010
Nowadays, new urban development strategies emphasize on pedestrian construction where pedestrian zones must meet the standard requirements in order to improve citizen mobility. Urban economies, social justice, and sustainable transportation may be impacted by pedestrianization. Certainly, pedestrianization and walkability can significantly reduce traffic congestion in historic and downtown districts. Concerning historical urban attitudes and relevant potentials, this paper proposes reconstructions to build better pedestrian areas in historic places where private car traffic and public transport lanes are also considered in pathway construction. As...
Private Car Ownership in Presence of Shared Autonomous Vehicles, Case of Tehran

Transactions on Transport Sciences 2023, 14(3):54-60 | DOI: 10.5507/tots.2023.013
With the advent of autonomous vehicles (AVs), researchers have conducted various studies on the impacts of these vehicles, but limited research is found on the influence of AVs on private car ownership. Since AVs are not well-aligned with sustainable development, shared autonomous vehicles (SAVs) would be an appealing alternative. Hence, this paper aims to investigate the impact of socio-economic and travel-related characteristics on private car ownership in the presence of SAVs among private car users in Tehran. After designing a web-based stated preference (SP) questionnaire and analyzing 2154 valid SP responses in 2022, more than a quarter (26%)...
Exploring the Correlation Between Preexisting Knowledge and Public Perception of Self-Driving Cars
Kareem Othman
Transactions on Transport Sciences 2023, 14(3):61-68 | DOI: 10.5507/tots.2023.009
Self-driving vehicles (SDVs) possess the potential to provide novel benefits while also presenting new risks. Consequently, SDVs are expected to not only influence the transportation network but also reshape urban landscapes, markets, economies, and public behavior. The public's willingness to utilize or ride in SDVs is a critical factor determining the extent to which their implications can be realized. Previous research has indicated that awareness of SDVs is a key factor influencing the public's decision-making and attitude toward this nascent technology. However, none of these studies have exclusively examined the relationship between the public's...
