Editorial: Will the positive development in transport have a negative effect on the economy?

Karel Pospíąil

Transactions on Transport Sciences 2023, 14(1)

The new issue of the magazine brings seven interesting articles from different areas of transport. They discuss aspects of autonomous cars, modal shift behavior of car users to light rail transit, impact of commuting time on life satisfaction, increase of public transport use by the local population, user public transport perception during the covid pandemic, identification of older adult needs as future users of autonomous shuttles and perceived effectiveness of penalties in traffic. They are generally a contribution to the solution of topics discussed in the public space, on professional forums and scientific journals in the last ten years. They...

Feasibility of AR-VR use in autonomous cars for user engagements and its effects on posture and vigilance during transit

Joseph Muguro, Pringgo Widyo Laksono, Yuta Sasatake, Muhammad Ilhamdi Rusydi, Kojiro Matsushita, Minoru Sasaki

Transactions on Transport Sciences 2023, 14(1):4-13 | DOI: 10.5507/tots.2022.019

Autonomous driving system (ADS) is anticipated to revolutionize travel by reclaiming lost time and improve safety on the roads. With automation, user-engagements that enhances road monitoring should be considered to maintain vigilance and safety. From the literature, virtual reality (VR) usage in cars offer productivity and increased privacy. This paper explores the efficacy of passenger use of VR headsets to enhance user-engagement during transit. User-engagement was quantified using physiological measures (pupillary response and electrodermal activity) during an in-car VR game/activity experiment. Further, the impacts of engaging with secondary tasks...

Identification of older adults' needs as future users of autonomous shuttles: A serious game co-creation approach for inclusiveness

Cesar Casiano Flores, Fien Vanongeval, Thérèse Steenberghen

Transactions on Transport Sciences 2023, 14(1):14-23 | DOI: 10.5507/tots.2022.024

Automated vehicles are potential disrupters of the mobility system and are expected to address inclusive mobility issues. Yet, the transition to their full implementation in cities is expected to face numerous challenges. While companies and governments interested in their future implementation have conducted pilots to understand better their implementation in cities, there is still a limited understanding of potential users' needs. This understanding becomes even more limited when considering vulnerable groups. To address this gap, we have developed a novel Serious Game named "A shuttle for everyone". We use it as a co-creation method to engage potential...

Modal shift behavior of car users to light rail transit, some evidence from the field

Mohammadhossein Abbasi, Amir Reza Mamdoohi, Wulf-Holger Arndt

Transactions on Transport Sciences 2023, 14(1):24-29 | DOI: 10.5507/tots.2022.021

Growing population and car dependency in developing countries have led to congestion that adversely affects the environment, travel time, trip cost, accidents, and public transportation reliability. Through implementation of travel demand management (TDM) policies, governments and policymakers aim to reduce private vehicle dependency and encourage people to use public transportation. Light rail transit is an important part of an attractive public transport. Rail transportation systems, though offer many potential benefits, are a major financial challenge for governments because of the high capital and operation costs. Therefore, passenger behavior...

The perceived effectiveness of penalties in traffic offender and non-offender groups: the role of the Dark Triad and Behavior Inhibition/Activation Systems

Tadas Vadvilavičius, Laura ©eibokaitė, Auksė Endriulaitienė, Rasa Markąaitytė, Mark Sullman

Transactions on Transport Sciences 2023, 14(1):30-37 | DOI: 10.5507/tots.2023.001

Although the number of studies about the perception of traffic enforcement has increased, the importance of personality characteristics on these perceptions remain under-researched. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between the Dark Triad personality trait and the perceived effectiveness of traffic penalties for traffic offenders and non-offenders and to test whether BIS and BAS mediate this relationship. A convenience sample of 694 Lithuanian drivers participated in the study (55.3 percent males; aged 18-73 years). More than half (57.9 percent) of the drivers were non-offenders, while 42.1 percent reported having been sanctioned...

Harm or asset? Investigating the impact of commuting time on life satisfaction in Ústí nad Labem, Czech Republic

Julius Janáček, Pavol Minárik, Daniel ©»astný

Transactions on Transport Sciences 2023, 14(1):38-43 | DOI: 10.5507/tots.2022.020

This study investigates the impact of commuting on life satisfaction of inhabitants of Ústí nad Labem, Czech Republic. The sample is based on three consecutive questionnaire surveys in years 2019, 2020 and 2021, n = 1686 (893 women). The data was analyzed using ordered logit regression models. The results show that in the case of women, there is an optimal commuting time when using public transport. Also, active commuting (on foot or riding a bike) has a potential positive influence on women's life satisfaction. Commuting by car has no influence on the life satisfaction of women. In the case of men, there is no relation between commuting time and life...

How might public transport become more extensively used by the local population in Nellmersbach?

Florian Wondratschek, Niva Wilson, Vaisakh Gangadharan, Joji Jose

Transactions on Transport Sciences 2023, 14(1):44-57 | DOI: 10.5507/tots.2022.023

This elaboration deals with the expansion potential of public transport in the city of Nellmersbach. As a commuter city with an S-Bahn connection, the expansion of public transport is imperative for environmental reasons, since most of the traffic goes to the congested Stuttgart. Based on commuter flows and regional accessibility analysis, it is examined how long public transport to Stuttgart and the neighboring communities takes compared to the car. There is a quantitative cross-sectional survey that shows the numbers before and after the 15-minute increase in the frequency of the S-Bahn and puts them in context. Based on qualitative extension proposals...

Transactions on Transport Sciences 2023, 14(1):58-66 | DOI: 10.5507/tots.2022.022

Since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, the transport sector has faced new challenges connected with decreasing use of public transport and passengers' concerns about possible contagion. Using focus groups and data collection by telephone interviews during the different phases of the pandemic, we investigated passengers' current concerns connected with public transport and what measures would help alleviate their fear of using it again. Our findings show that the pandemic has amplified passengers' sensitivity to phenomena they perceived negatively already before the pandemic, such as overcrowded vehicles, odours, or inadequate cleaning...
