Safe or unsafe driving maneuvers in road traffic
Stanislav Tokař
Transactions on Transport Sciences 2017, 8(2):3-13 | DOI: 10.5507/tots.2017.009
This article represents an area closely connected to the analysis of road accidents. When the act of accident is being considered by an expert, it often happens that one participant of the accident causes that the other participant has to change suddenly the speed or direction of his/her drive to prevent possible collision. For a proper consideration of the driving manoeuvres we need to know the limit of a sudden change of speed or a sudden change of direction of drive. The limit of suddenness can be taken as the limit between a safe and already unsafe driving manoeuvre (braking, transverse motion) of the vehicle. The author tried to settle this limit...
Appraisal of transport infrastructure for pedestrians in the city area, the case of Pardubice
Josef Bulíček, Pavlína Broľová
Transactions on Transport Sciences 2017, 8(2):14-38 | DOI: 10.5507/tots.2017.010
The paper is focused on pedestrian traffic in city area of Pardubice. Three localities are characterized in the first part of the paper. Each of them is illustrating one different problem of pedestrian transport. The first locality is a rush interchanging node of urban public transport located on both sides of a rush street. Problems related to passengers crossing this street by interchanging are highlighted. The second locality is representing a problem of decision between pedestrian level crossing or underpass. The third locality is representing a place with complicated interaction between transport participants (pedestrians and cyclists) in the...

Transactions on Transport Sciences 2017, 8(2):39-45 | DOI: 10.5507/tots.2017.011
The use of in-vehicle technology influences driving behavior and impacts traffic safety. In this study, driving errors made while using (and not using) a mobile phone, a navigation system, and cruise control were investigated. The sample consisted of 15 experienced drivers who twice drove the same route - once while using IVT (in-vehicle technology) and once without using IVT. Drivers were observed using the Wiener Fahrprobe method. Drivers using cruise control drove too fast less often, but too slow (according to observers' opinion) more often and broke more traffic rules. They also stayed too long in the left lane without overtaking and maintained...

Transactions on Transport Sciences 2017, 8(2):46-61 | DOI: 10.5507/tots.2017.008
This paper summarizes the current situation in eleven European countries in the field of driver offender courses. As a background, driver behaviour models are presented, followed by the description of behaviour, performance, and personality factors as contributory factors to crashes, risky driver behaviour, and groups of risky drivers. Selected enforcement and rehabilitation models are listed. Data was collected using a questionnaire, which was elaborated on the basis of the opinions of experts discussed at international expert workshops. The study covered a total sample of eleven participants - TPI members representing each country. The data was analyzed...

Transactions on Transport Sciences 2017, 8(2):62-69 | DOI: 10.5507/tots.2017.012
We examined Czech drunk drivers and their opinions and beliefs about drunk driving, strategies to avoid being caught, and their understanding of the associated legal punishments. Two focus groups were conducted with a total of 10 people who had suspended driving licenses and who had experience with driving under the influence of alcohol. The participants incorrectly believed that a small amount of alcohol does not influence their driving behavior. Some of them incorrectly believed that alcohol might be eliminated from the blood by eating, drinking water, using capsules, or having a short sleep. Most of them declared that they drove under the influence...
